Granny and Granddaddy's house

After we spent a couple of days in Atlanta, we headed down to Keith's grandparents' house. We usually only see them once a year at Thanksgiving, but we're trying to do better than that, so we went for a visit. The kids always love going there, as there's an endless supply of dirt. That's not the only reason, but that's definitely part of it!! There's also the golf cart, four wheeler and the lake. Of course they enjoy getting to see Granny and Granddaddy! Oh, how could I forget Granny's cooking?! That's why Keith goes! Just kidding (sort of)! I wasn't able to make Chloe a birthday cake since we were traveling, but Granny took care of that. She always has a chocolate cake on hand! We had a great visit, and hopefully we can do it more often from now on, just not in the truck.

Atlanta

We had a great time in Atlanta. We went to the World of Coke, the Varsity, and a Braves game. Even with all that, I think they kids favorite part might have been riding the marta!! We enjoyed hanging out with Chris, Mindy and Hannah. Chloe and Hannah were so cute together. Every time we would drive somewhere, they would get out and call each other!! The Braves game was hotter than we expected, but we made it through it, and no one got sunburned!! That's an accomplishment for us.

Happy Birthday baby girl!!

I'm a few days late with this post, but it's because we were busy celebrating. Hopefully Chloe won't mind too much. I'll post later about our trip this weekend.
I love this picture of Chloe because it's just her-the look on her face, the finger in the belly button, and the pen all over her. She's such a girly girl and a tomboy at the same time. She loves everything girl, but she also loves to get dirty. I guess that's how it is when you have two older brothers. She either has to love playing what they play, or play by herself. She can actually do both pretty happily. I'm still so amazed that God sent her to us. I thought for sure I was destined to be the mother of only boys, but I'm so thankful that He knew better. She's such a joy in our lives. I'm enjoying the time with her at home, even though some days are more frustrating then others. I still can't believe that she's three!!
Happy Birthday Chloe! I hope you had a wonderful day! I love you more than I can say!!

"We broke the van"- Chloe

I have horrible luck with tires. Seriously. I've had three blown tires, all before Keith and I were married. We were going through Atlanta when I was pregnant with Avery, and a tire, wheel and everything, bounced over the median, and hit our car. Just a few months ago, I had a flat tire because I ran over some construction trash, probably on our street. It was time for new tires, so without planning, we bought all new tires. Well, my lousy luck continued today. Chloe and I were headed to the gym in Nashville, and we ran over a piece of tire on interstate. I didn't have time to get over, so I decided it was better to hit the tire rather then hit another car. Thankfully, no one hit us from behind, and the van is fine other than a bit banged up. It's just one of those frustrating things that you have absolutely no control over. Oh, and the piece of tire was huge. It might as well have been the whole tire.
To top it off, we're traveling this weekend. Now we're traveling in the truck, which is less than roomy. I'm not very excited about having all three kids stuck next to each other, and right behind us, but I'm VERY thankful that we aren't going to be in Keith's white car!!
Did any of you notice that the van now looks somewhat like his old car? The white car had a huge hole in the front on the drivers' side, and that's exactly where the van got hit. Funny, I hadn't really missed having a part of the vehicle flapping as you drive.

The end is in sight!!

This is our last week of school. Well, except for next Wednesday, when the kids are supposed to go pick up their report cards. For my kids, this is the last week. I think it's ridiculous to go back next week, so they'll get their report cards in the mail. This has been a very challenging year for us. There are good things about this school, I'm sure there are, but none come to mind at the moment!! That's not entirely true. I can think of a few good things, like the fact that Avery is going to be ready for sixth grade next year. (he's only in the fourth grade this year) Okay, I'll really stop now. I just feel the need to have some closure about this year of school, so this is my final post about it. I need to get a few things off my chest, and I promise I'll be done. I've actually tried really hard to not always whine about it on here. That doesn't mean that a few of you haven't had to hear about it though!! I mean, I've got to vent to someone!!
About a month ago, Keith went to the school and talked to Avery's teacher about a rule that we found unfair and too strict. I should have gone up to the school earlier in the year, but I just couldn't make myself do it. Keith said the conversation was somewhat heated, but not a yelling match or anything. I went up to the school that day to check Avery out, because of the disagreement, and I ended up having a conversation with her too. It's what I was trying to avoid, but I managed to hold it together until I got back in the van. Then I was hysterical. Anyway, back to the conversation with his teacher. I told her that there were several issues that we didn't see eye to eye on, and I saw no compromise. She talked about not bending the rules for Avery, which is NOT what we wanted or ever said. She also mentioned that we wouldn't want him in a class that just plays all the time. Again, that's not what we wanted either. All we wanted was some kind of balance. He's still a kid, and doesn't need to act like an adult yet. She just didn't see it that way. She even got emotional that we were that upset. I felt awful for upsetting her, but I didn't back down from what I believed. She actually said to me, that it only gets worse as he gets older. She said school isn't fun for kids anymore. Wow, way to be encouraging. Thanks for giving me something to look forward to. I know that not all fourth grades are like this, not even at our school. There's got to be a better way to find balance. She also told me that they averaged the required amount of recess over the entire year. There is no way that's true. They have been going out most days this last month, but that's not how it should be. Here's what I think. School isn't about kids anymore. It's about government, budget cuts, paperwork, test results and political correctness. I'm already sad that I have to send them back next year. I know all teachers are not as strict and unforgiving as her, but it's left me with such a bad taste in my mouth, that I dislike the entire school. Actually dislike is not strong enough, but I think you get the picture. So, we end this year with a very unsettling feeling. I don't know how next year is going to be, but I guarantee that we won't have another year like this one.
Okay, now I feel the need to apologize to all the teachers that read this. My kids have had some wonderful teachers that we truly loved, and it wasn't because we agreed on everything. I admire anyone who chooses to be a teacher. It's an overwhelming job to deal with all the kids, their parents(especially those like me!), and all the rules that you have thrust upon you. I don't want anyone to think I'm not trying to be understanding. Trust me, I've tried all year to understand. I know there are things that teachers would change too. So, I'm sorry if I've offended anyone while I was ranting. I just needed to get it out, and hopefully be done with it. I'm ready to put this year behind us, and start fresh.

New Kids on the Block?!

I couldn't resist blogging about this. I have seen stories about their reunion, but I had no idea that it was true. My brother called me yesterday at seven in the morning to let me know they were going to be on the Today show. Of course I HAD to watch it, I mean, come on! My heart didn't go pitter patter like it once did, but it was fun to watch. I know I'm not the only one that was once crazy over them. That's obvious by the crowd yesterday at the show. They also mentioned that one of their concerts sold out in four minutes! So, did any of you catch the show yesterday? What did you think?

My home feels complete....

This piano is my mom's. My grandparents gave it to her when she was a little girl. My granddaddy wanted me to have it, so it has been at my parents' house for a few years. It's always been special to me, and I'm honored to now have it my home. It was hard for me to accept it because that means my mom no longer has a piano in her house. That just didn't seem right to me, but I'm very excited to have it. I already love having it here, and the kids have really enjoyed it too. I can't wait to get back into playing. I haven't had a piano since I got married, and I've really missed it. I started taking lessons when I was five, and continued until I graduated high school. I'm not that great, but I enjoy it. I wish now I had taken it more seriously and practiced more.
I sat down to play tonight and immediately thought of my piano teacher. I knew that if she were here, she would tell me that my nails were too long. It was just one of those things that really takes you back, and makes you smile.

Birthday girl

Yesterday we were talking to Chloe about her birthday coming up, and we asked her what she wanted. She told us she already got a present. She mentioned a couple of things that she got recently, one was a book Keith got her from the boys' book fair(quite a while ago), and the other was M&M's from Minima(my mom). She never did tell us anything she wanted, but was completely happy with what she already has. Wow, what a lesson! Of course, if I put a toy catalog in front of her and ask her what she wants, the answer will be different, but isn't that true of anyone? I thought it was really cute that she didn't name one of the many things she's named before. They were all really big things too, like a car, a kitchen, etc. Now if only contentment was contagious...

I'm still here

It's been a few days since I've posted anything. Sometimes that's because there isn't anything worth putting on here, but this time it was because it's been pretty busy around here. Keith and I went on a short trip to Kentucky, or 'tucky', as Chloe calls it. No, that's not our dream destination, but Keith had to go there for a couple of days for guard, and I tagged along. Louisville has some nice shopping, two malls right beside each other!! That's all I cared about. It was fun to have some time to myself, and some time with Keith without kids. My mom stayed at our house with the kids. We owe you Mom!! She even had to deal with baseball! The kids had a blast, and I'm pretty sure Mom slept well last night. I think Chloe wore her out!
So, life and baseball continue. The kids have less then two weeks of school, and the excitement is in the air. Of course, so is the arguing, whining and complaining, but hey, I'm ready! This has been the longest year, and I'm thankful that's it's almost over. The next few weekends are really busy, but that's a good thing. It makes me feel blessed with wonderful friends and family.

a Chloe story

The other day in the van, Chloe randomly tells me that she has a boyfriend. His name is Brock, and he likes football and baseball. Where does she get this stuff? We don't even joke with her about stuff like that. Brock is a little boy in her class at church, so at least she chose someone from there! Every day I'm amazed by this little girl. You never know what's going to come out of her mouth.

Braces and baseball

Avery has already had more work done on his teeth than some people have in a lifetime. He always does really well with it, and this time is no exception. This week he got braces, only on the bottom and only on the front four teeth. He has had upper and lower expanders since last fall, and last week he had the lower one removed. Even though his mouth is pretty sore right now, I think it will be better than what he just had removed. This is just a taste of what a mouth full of braces is going to be like. He's destined to have those in a few years too.
I'm finally getting some pictures of one of Avery's games on here. Most of his games have been in the evening, so it's harder to get good pictures.

What message am I sending?

I recently had a conversation with a couple of friends from church. They are both 8-10 years younger than I am, newly married and with no kids. Somehow we got to talking about stay at home moms. One of them was talking about a friend of theirs who is a stay at home mom. She said that she makes sure to get her shower and be presentable before her husband comes home. She makes sure she's not still in her pajamas looking like she just got out of bed. She feels it's her responsibility to look nice for her husband when he comes home. I just thought this was interesting, and I've been thinking about it a lot since then. I don't usually stay in my pajamas, but I won't say there aren't days. Most of the time those are the days that I've worked the hardest, and just never remembered to change. I almost always have time to shower, but there are days when it just doesn't work out. Anyway, I don't consciously get myself ready for when Keith gets home, but that doesn't mean that I don't look forward to it. That's my favorite part of the day, and not because I'm ready for him to deal with the kids, but because I like having him around. (that's a good thing too, since I'm stuck with him regardless!!) Anyway, I'm really curious what you guys think. I wonder if I'm in the minority or not. I would love to hear from everyone, men and women, whether you stay at home, work part time, or full time. I really want to know what you think.
